Spaying is a surgical procedure performed in a sterile hospital environment, where aseptic conditions rival those a person experiences when subjected to an appendectomy in a human hospital. The surgery is done under a general anaesthetic using a combination of injectable anaesthetics and gaseous anaesthetics.
An R.V.T.( Registered Veterinary Technician)supervises the operation. The Veterinarian wears cap, mask, sterile gown and gloves for this procedure. They cover the animal with sterile drapes and all instruments are sterilized. Ovariohysterectomy is the medical term for spaying. The surgery involves the removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. If the ovaries are not removed, the bothersome heat periods still occur although pregnancy is impossible.
