Casey, an eight year old Cocker Spaniel, came into the hospital Aug. 6/09 vomiting and lethargic. Casey was still eating and drinking. Dr. Grant ordered a complete blood count and chemistry panel. The results indicated increased liver enzymes and increased white blood cell count. Upon exam Casey had a very painful abdomen. Dr. Grant recommended abdominal ultrasound. Casey was diagnosed with GALL BLADDER MUCOCOELE.
Gall bladder mucocoele is the formation of a tenacious, thick mucoid substance in the gall bladder obstructing its storage capacity and function. Shelties, Mini Schnauzers and Cocker Spaniels may be predisposed breeds. The risk is a ruptured gall bladder.
Casey was very ill and referred to Guelph Veterinary Teaching Hospital. There he underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder (cholecystectomy), and a liver biopsy. He was able to go home on antibiotics and liver support medications, a few days later.
Casey required strict rest and supervision. With all the tender loving care provided by him "Mom" Tanya ( our receptionist ), Casey is back to his old self.
He will require monitoring of his liver enzymes for the next few months and is expected to fully recover.
