Case Study

          C. J,   a seven year old Boxer was examined by Dr. Godfrey.   She was panting excessively, was lethargic, not eating and had a vaginal discharge.  A complete blood count was suspicious of a pyometra.
Pyometra is defined as an infection in the uterus (pus filled uterus).  It can be open (discharge seen ), or closed.  It is often the result of hormonal changes in the reproductive tract in the intact female.  Pyometra can occur in young to middle aged dogs however is most common in older dogs.  The recommended treatment is to surgically remove the uterus and ovaries (spay).
        C. J. was hospitalized, placed on intravenous fluids and antibiotics.  Dr. Godfrey performed the surgery with great care as the uterus is much more delicate at this point and extreme care must be taken to ensure that no pus gets into the abdomen.  The cost is greater than a normal spay on a young healthy animal.
        C. J has completely recovered.   As soon as the infection is removed the dog recovers dramatically.
The benefit of spaying pets early include the prevention of both pyometra and some mammary cancers.
