Mattie a one year old beagle/Basset puppy was examined by Dr. Grant on Jan 15/09. She was swallowing, drooling excessively, vomiting and was weak. Mattie was hospitalized on intravenous fluids. A few test such as a thyroid profile, acetochline receptor antibody titre , a complete blood count , bio chemistry and x-rays with barium were performed. Dr. Grant diagnosed MEGAESOPHAGUS.
Megaesophagus is when the esophagus loses its ability to transport food. To be technical there is an interruption of the neurologic reflex of sequential muscle contraction/relaxation that transports the food swallowed to the stomach. Instead the esophagus loses all tone and dilates. Food sits in the esophagus until it is regurgitated. Aspiration pneumonia is also a big concern with this condition.
Treatment for Mattie will be to feed her a gastro intestinal diet (or easily digested diet), in an upright position, in small amounts frequently, for the rest of her life. Medications include a G.I. motility drug , a drug that reduces acid production and a drug that is a G.I. binder to prevent inflammation of the mucosa lining. They may be needed periodically or long term. Some breeds are genetically predisposed such as young puppies, Great Danes, German shepherds, Shar pei, and Labs.
Mattie is doing very well at home. Her "Mom" has no problem pampering Mattie, ensuring she gets the best possible care.
